Rom. 12.1-2.
We will focus on the phrase in Romans 12: 2, "by
renewing your mind." "And do not adapt to this world, but
transform yourself by renewing your mind, so that you can verify what the
will of God is: what is good, acceptable and perfect." As exalting
Christians of Christ, we are completely useless if all we do is adapt to the
world around us.
And the key to not waste our lives with this kind of success and
prosperity, according to Pablo, is to be transformed: "do not adapt to
this world, but transform". That word, transformation, is used
only once in all the gospels, exclusively, when it refers to Jesus on the mount
of transfiguration (the mount of transformation - the same
word, metemorphõthë ): “and it was transfigured before
them; and his face shone like the sun, and his garments became white as light
”(Matthew 17: 2; Mark 9: 2).
THE TRANSFORMATION IS NOT ONLY EXTERNAL
I make this point for one reason: to make it clear
that disagreement with the world does not primarily mean externally
evading worldly behaviors. It's included. But you can avoid all kinds
of mundane behavior and yet not be transformed: "His face shone
like the sun, and his garments became white as light." Something like
this happens to us both spiritually and morally. Mentally, first inside,
and then, later, in the resurrection occurs externally. Thus Jesus speaks
of us, in the resurrection: "Then the righteous will shine like the sun in
the kingdom of their Father" (Matthew 13:43).
The transformation is not to change from the list of actions of
the meat to the list of actions of the law. When Paul replaces the list —
the works — of the flesh, he does not change them for the works of the law, but
for the fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5: 19-22). The Christian
alternative to immoral behavior is not to create a new list of behaviors. The
Christian alternative to immorality is the triumphant power and transformation
of the Holy Spirit through faith in Jesus Christ - our Savior, our Lord, and
our Treasure. “[God] made us sufficient as ministers of a new
covenant, not of the letter, but of the Spirit; because the letter kills,
but the Spirit gives life ”(2nd Corinthians 3: 6). So the transformation
is a profound internal change, paid for by the blood of Christ, and carried out
by the Holy Spirit.
THE FREEDOM OF BEING SUBJECT TO CHRIST
This is why the Christian life - although
fully subject (Romans 8: 7; 10: 3), enslaved (Romans 6:19,
22), to the will of God - is described in the New Testament as a
radically free life . “Now, the Lord is the
Spirit; and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom
”(2 Corinthians 3:17). “For freedom it was that Christ set us
free; therefore, stand firm, and do not submit again to the yoke of
slavery ”(Galatians 5: 1). In Christ we
are free, because when we do what we love to do from our
hearts , we are free, if what we love to do is what
we must do. And that is the meaning of transformation:
when we are transformed into Christ, we love to do what we must do. That
is
freedom.
AN ESSENTIAL TRANSPORT MEDIA: THE RENEWAL OF THE MIND
And in Romans 12: 2 Paul focuses on an essential means of
transportation - "the renewal of your mind." "And don't
adapt to this world, but transform yourself by renewing your
mind." Oh, how important it is!
If you yearn to free yourself from conformity with the world,
If you long to be transformed from the inside out and become a new
being,
If you long to stop being a simple Christian driven by duty, and
long to start doing what you love to do, do it because what you love to do is
what you should do,
If he longs to offer his body as a living sacrifice, so that his
whole life is a spiritual act of worship and shows the value of Christ above
the value of the world.
Then surrender with all your strength and pursue the renewal of
your mind. Because the Bible says, that is the key to achieving
transformation: "the renewal of your mind." "And don't
adapt to this world, but transform yourself by renewing your
mind."
What about the human mind? Why do our minds need to be
renewed? And how is this renovation? And how can we look for and
enjoy this renewal?
THE PROBLEM OF OUR MINDS
There are many who think that the only problem of the human mind
is that it does not have access to all the knowledge it needs. So
education becomes the great instrument to achieve redemption - both personal
and social. If people simply had more education, they would not use their
minds to invent elaborate scams, and sophisticated terrorist plots, and complex
schemes for embezzlement, nor would they manipulate with the many words, nor
the agile-minded radial rudeness . If only I had more
education!
The Bible makes a deeper analysis about this problem. In
Ephesians 4:23 Paul uses a shocking phrase to parallel Romans 12: 2. He
says: "And may you be renewed in the spirit of your mind." Now,
what does it mean for the world ?: "the spirit of your mind". At
least, it means that the human mind is not a sophisticated data processing
computer that then faithfully shows this data to the heart so that it gives an
appropriate emotional response. The mene has a "spirit." In
other words, our minds have something we usually call
"mentality." He not only has an opinion, he has a point of
view. Not only does he have the power to perceive and detect; It also
has a posture, a behavior, an orientation, an attitude, an
inclination. "And may you be renewed in the spirit of your
mind."
The problem with our minds does not simply lie in the fact that we
are not infinite, and therefore, we do not have all the information. The
problem is that our minds are down. Our minds have a spirit, an
inclination, a mentality that is hostile to the absolute supremacy of
God. Our minds are inclined not to see God as infinitely more praiseworthy
than we are, or than the things we do or accomplish.
This is what we saw last week in Romans 1:28: "And
just as they had no good in recognizing God, God gave them to a depraved
mind." So we are by nature. We do not want to see
God as worthy of being recognized and treasured above all things. And you
know that this is true about yourself because of how little you strive to know
God, and how much it costs your mind to spend some time getting to know God
better. The Bible says that we have changed “the glory of God
incorruptible by an image in the form of a corruptible man” (Romans
1:23). And the image in the mirror is the mortal image that we adore
most.
